First Day of School! And Another First Day of School But This One Was a Week Later!

School started for Kate two weeks ago. Kate was excited- she is a good student and tends to like school most of the time.  Now that she is in third grade she has lost most of the fears that plagued her in the earlier grades.  She knows lots of kids and her way around the school. The only fear that continues to plague her is the state of her hair, so I cancelled piano lessons on the first day of school in order to be certain that there was ample time for curling and fluffing.  She wore the purple shirt that Grandma Ellie bought her on the first day.

Kindergarten starts a week later than the rest of elementary.  The first week of school the teacher meets with each individual student/parent to assess where they are and get to know them a little.  I came prepared to suck up with a summers' worth of box tops, my classroom donation, and a gift card to Walmart.  Kiki was nervous, but seemed to do okay.  She's definitely not one of the kids who is reading or anything like that, but I honestly didn't make that a priority in her life.  We were wrapped up in our international life for most of last year and I still feel like that was the right call for us.  Grandma Ellie has been working on math with Kiki (oddly, it's been when Kiki has refused to sit with her Primary class and has been hiding out behind the piano with Merrilee), and Maggie felt like that wasn't really covered during her assessment.  On the way out of the classroom then, she said, "And two plus two is four!"  Take that.

I was prepared to cry my eyes out the first day of kindergarten, but I didn't shed a tear.  It was thanks to Bruce- he took her and I stayed home.  I was afraid I would have a total breakdown and that would have been terrible and confusing so it was better to let him to the heavy lifting on that one.

And look!  She made it home safe and sound.  She likes school, but did ask this morning, "When's summer vacation?"

You wimped out on the first day of school? I was really looking forward to the sage advice Kiki would give her weepy mother, turning a touching moment into a funny one like only she can do! Now I will have to wait until next year and it will be me and my weepy self listening to my wise beyond her years 5 year old.
