Women in Politics

Did my Facebook post peeve you this morning? In case you missed it:

Just read Sarah Palin's 400 page book in 20 minutes. It's totally possible when you skip all the blame, excuses, conspiracy theories, sentences with the word "rogue," and unnecessary prepositional phrases.

Allow me to expand on the topic in a way that the character maximums of a Facebook post don't permit.

I dig the idea of women in politics. I truly believe that women are the kinder, gentler sex. Don't believe me? Men are the force behind assembly lines, the war in Iraq (other than you, Condie Rice, shame, shame), genocide, and cheese. (I made the last one up. We all know cheese is inherently good. Although, to their credit, we really appreciate the Pill, penicillin, and bras.)

I think women make great leaders. The problem with women in politics is this- We all want our leaders to be articulate, intelligent, moral, and family-oriented. I personally know many women with every single one of these qualities.

Not a single one of them wants a career in politics.

I'll tell you why. An articulate woman takes one look at Joe Biden and thinks, "I couldn't take 5 minutes with that dude, let alone a term." An intelligent woman has spent most of her life fighting to separate herself from the men she is smarter than (yet make more money than her) and can't imagine throwing herself back into that fray on purpose. A moral woman knows that if you wallow with pigs, you get dirty, and will stay as far away from corruption as humanly possible. A family-oriented woman knows that the most important work she can do is in her home, and wouldn't leave it even if it WAS the President calling. And there's the problem: The majority of women who say "Yes!" to a career in politics are absolutely not the kind of women who I want representing me. I hope that there are some who defy my logic, I really do.

And there's my gripe with Sarah Palin- it's got very little to do with her politics. It's just that somewhere in the dark recesses of her private office there's a little to-do list with the words "Research Down's Syndrome Early Interventions" gathering dust underneath a vision board with a picture of the White House on it. Her family life is out of control and instead gathering close and sorting things out in private, she writes a book and says things like, "I'm not retreating; I'm reloading." It's disgusting.

I want a woman in the White House, but I want the RIGHT woman in the White House.

I liked your facebook comment. I agree.
You know, the problem with politics in general is that the kind of human being, man or woman, that we would want to elect usually never even run for office. And when they do, they get out spent.
Frustrating topic!
