Current Obsessions

Obsession #1: Warren Buffett: Not in a creepy "daddy issues" kind of way, more like I just read "Snowball" (his biography) in less than a week. It was about 900 pages of riveting information; I even read the footnotes and endnotes. He predicted (although he insists he never makes "predictions") the internet stock bubble bursting, the weakened state of the dollar, and the mortgage crisis- all years before the occurrence. It was based on logic, and not just panic and guesswork. He is a fascinating guy, and I'm relatively certain Bruce is sick of me interjecting the phrase, "Know what Warren Buffet thinks about that?" into every conversation. Hey, it's not my fault that the thoughts of my new friend Warren are relevant to all conceivable topics of conversation. If you have some serious spare time, pick up "Snowball" at your local library for a really great read.

Obsession #2 is my new Danskos. Liza turned me on to the orthopedic bliss offered by said shoe. OF COURSE I couldn't choose just plain black! I'm sporting the leopard print. In my mind, leopard print is like khaki or black- it goes with EVERYTHING. Thanks for the tip, Liza.

Obsession #3: More books! I can never read just one book at a time. Here's what's currently on the nightstand:
-Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, Thomas Ricks. I'm only one chapter in, but the author was a finalist for the Pulitzer for this book, and it's already obvious why. (Someday, Lindsay, I will give this book back...so sorry.)
-The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan. Thanks for the recommendation, Rose. It's a great read. I'm almost done.
-This Land is Their Land, Barbara Ehrenreich. If you haven't read "Nickeled and Dimed" or "The Working Poor" by Ehrenreich, you are missing a serious opportunity to lay your head on your pillow at night and think to yourself, 'You know, I don't have it so bad.' This book is more of the same straight talk/gut check.
-And to balance out all this non-fiction, I've got the US Magazine coming to me on a weekly basis. I'd hate to become too intellectual, so I dumb it down every Friday.

Obsession #4: Locating the perfect milk chocolate buttercream frosting. Help me. I must have it.

Amen, with the Dansko recommendations. I have two pair and I rarely wear anything else. I'm jealous of the leopard print--eek. I may have to copy cat.

And...I'll send the MS chocolate buttercream recipe. It is a true buttercream. My only complaint is that it is too rich for me. She uses melted chocolate instead of cocoa powder and about 2 cubes of butter for one cake--whoa, back. A little goes a long way if you know what I mean. It's the one taken from her "Baking" cookbook. Let me know if you've already tried it.

I'll ask my mentor teacher. She makes wedding cakes on the side and she is amazing.

What just happened?? Did my comment not work? I'll try this again.

Crap. Okay, my original comment was lost to the internet. I'll try to remember what I said.

First: A guaranteed crowd pleaser on the chocolate frosting end is this: the perfectly perfect chocolate frosting recipe on the back of the Hershey's can. Don't believe me? Ask Sid Robison, chef extraordinaire who uses this recipe along with her amazing chocolate cake recipe. Using her cake recipe has made me fairly famous in certain circles. So don't dis it just because it is on the back of the label. It's there for a reason. Thank you, Hershey's.

Next: I swear by Danskos. They have seen me through 4 pregnancies, and I would gladly do an infomercial for them to preach of their wonders. But leopard print... go girl. You have taken them to a new level. Total hotness!

Also: Thanks for the book recommendations. I loved Mr. Pollan's book called In Defense of Food. It has really changed the way we eat around here.

And finally; I love you!
